May 21, 2017 is Women’s Day.
United Methodist Women: Seekers of Justice for All
Part of Justice Weekend 2017
For our 2017 Women’s Day we welcome back Helen Roberts-Evans, our missionary to Liberia, speaking 3pm-5pm.
Helen Roberts-Evans is a missionary of the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church, serving as director of the Department of General Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church in Liberia. She was commissioned in October 2009, having initially gone to Liberia as a mission volunteer in July 2008. Helen was born in Liberia and her return as a missionary was a lifelong dream.
Helen’s work includes meeting needs in such areas as teacher training, scholarships, resources, new school
construction, and school building renovation and repair. “My father taught at the University of Liberia from 1956 to 1958,” Helen says. “During those two years, he traveled throughout the country filming and taking hundreds of photographs. I was only one year old whenwe came to Chicago, but we often watched my father’s slides and movies as my parents told us stories about the history and politics of Liberia. I wanted to return and experience life there for myself.”
As a child, she also experienced the joy of interacting with persons of many backgrounds and religions, through community and university contracts in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood. In high school, she and a twin sister became involved with a student Christian organization, but her firm trust in God would come during a difficult marriage and the need to raise her four sons.
“I am thankful,” Helen says, “that my faith in God carried me through the raising of the sons. Now I have the joy of working with hundreds of Liberian children at church and school. I want to share the love of Christ with each child because I know that His love brings peace and gives strength to overcome life’s challenges.”
After attending high school in Evanston, Illinois, she studied in Bogotá, Colombia, and received a degree in special education from Boston University. Helen worked from 1998 through 2007 as executive director of the Child Care Center of Evanston. She was active in the Sherman United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and member of United Methodist Women. Helen is a member of Sherman United Methodist Church in Evanston, Illinois.
Of Liberia, Helen says: “I immediately felt at home. I saw people and met people from my dreams…At my home church in Evanston, I heard we are part of a connectional church, but I did not fully understand what they meant until I came to Liberia. I am meeting people from all over the world who are my brothers and sisters in Christ, and learning about needs of people all over the world. I am a member of the connectional church and the body of Christ.”
Women’s Day at Sherman is a special day in which we lift up:

To All Fisk Sponsors and Concert Attendees:
Praise God! The 2016 Fisk Fund Raiser and Church Anniversary event was a smashing success! We had a later start in pulling it together this year, and we had a very aggressive goal of raising $10,000.00 for the Fisk Choir. But God…..! Through His Blessings we were able to exceed the goal, for the first time in the ten year relationship we have enjoyed with Fisk. Through the generous sponsors and concert guest donations we raised $10,904.26 for the Fisk General Scholarship Fund, our largest donation in the ten years we have partnered with Fisk! What a way to celebrate Sherman’s 94th Anniversary! The Fisk committee came together and provided all seed funds and other expenses for the concert, allowing for more of the donations to go to Fisk and SUMC. As always, the reception meal was donated by MacArthur’s Restaurant as a donation to this major event.
We would like to offer our heartfelt Thank you to the sponsors and all the members of Sherman United Methodist Church for their support and efforts in making this event a success! Without your generous donations of funds and time we could not have completed this year’s mission! Thank God for all of you!
A special Thank You goes out to the 2016 Fisk Committee as they worked tirelessly to ensure we had a great concert and a successful fundraising event for both Fisk and SUMC.

It’s time! Time to be uplifted and amazed by The Fisk University Choir. Join us on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 7pm, and help us show these young people just how much their lives matter. For the tenth consecutive year, we are proud to host The Fisk University Choir in concert.
Besides blessing us with wonderful music, the concert supports an excellent university that continues to educate African-American scholars and leaders. With the help of generous sponsors, in the past nine years Sherman has been able to raise almost $50,000 that went directly to Fisk.
This event raises funds for both Fisk University and Sherman United Methodist Church, which is celebrating its 94th year of “sharing the love of God in word and actions” with programs for the hungry, for youth and helping support a missionary in Liberia.
Please consider partnering with us as a sponsor to support both Fisk students and the ministries of Sherman United Methodist Church that support struggling families. Check our sponsorship packages, listed below, to see how you can help.
Join us as we support Fisk University and give hope to struggling families. Your donation is a symbol that all lives matter.
Join in our ministry: Download our letter with sponsorship information, and please encourage others to do the same.
